Avalon, a Modern Culinary Sanctuary of Elevated Comfort Classics, Opens in Central

Central is never short of new openings, but every so often, something arrives that feels less like a launch and more like a shift. Avalon, the latest from Elite Concepts, sits quietly above Queen’s Road in H Queen’s — not trying to compete with the noise below, but offering something a little more considered.

The name itself sets the tone. Inspired by the mythical island of rest and retreat, Avalon isn’t chasing spectacle. Instead, it leans into a slower kind of luxury — one that feels increasingly rare in the city.

At the centre of it is Jarrod Verbiak, whose background in fine dining could easily lend itself to something more overtly technical. Instead, what’s being presented here is something more restrained: familiar dishes, approached with care rather than reinvention for the sake of it. It’s a direction that feels intentional — and, perhaps, more relevant than ever.

The menu reads like a list of things you already know you want to eat. Clam chowder, a lobster roll, a proper cheeseburger. But it’s the detail behind it — house-smoked bacon, carefully balanced sauces, elements made from scratch — that suggests this isn’t about nostalgia, but refinement. Comfort food, but with discipline.

The room follows a similar logic. Designed by Unite Unit, it’s warm, open, and quietly confident. There’s light, there’s space, and most importantly, there’s restraint. It feels like a place designed for staying, not just passing through.

There’s also something practical in the way Avalon positions itself. The weekday lunch offering — designed for solo diners and time-poor professionals — feels less like a marketing add-on and more like an acknowledgement of how people actually eat in Central. It’s thoughtful without being over-engineered.

Without having stepped inside yet, Avalon already reads clearly: it’s not trying to be the loudest restaurant in the room. And that might be exactly the point.
